In fall of 2018, NBC’s Sunday Night Football launched a “Football is Female” initiative in partnership with Refinery29 where each week, they would highlight a female who worked in football around one of the two teams featured in that matchup of SNF. In week 3, the Lions faced the Patriots at home, and On Her Turf contacted Tori to cover her work as the team reporter for the Detroit Lions. The video shows Tori’s perspective on being a female in a male-dominated industry and what she has done to overcome that.
As part of her responsibilities for the Detroit Lions, Tori works as the sideline reporter for the Lions’ preseason games that air on FOX2 and Fox Sports Detroit alongside play-by-play commentator Matt Shepard and color analyst Chris Spielman.
During the 2018 NFL preseason, NFL Network selected Lions vs. Browns at Ford Field to appear live on their air in Week 4. Since NFL Network broadcasts the home team’s feed, Tori and her crew were live on NFL Network to a national audience of 756,000 viewers as well as live locally on FOX2.
Tori was nominated for two Emmy awards from the Michigan chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. She received the nods in both the “Reporter – Sports” category and as part of a group entry in the “Sports – One-Time Special” category for her work as an on-camera talent, producer and editor for the Lions’ “Road to Kickoff” TV show.

Tori joined Fox Sports Detroit’s Detroit Pistons broadcast crew of George Blaha and Greg Kelser as the sideline reporter for the Pistons’ matchup with the Washington Wizards this March. She appeared on the pregame show as well as the postgame show with Mickey York and Tim McCormick, where she is seen here interviewing Andre Drummond.

While covering the 2017 NFL Combine for detroitlions.com, Tori filmed a promo video for the Lions’ combine coverage by running the 40-yard dash in the fan zone. Dressed in her work clothes and heels, the video was originally just meant to draw viewers in to the Lions site, but with a time under six seconds, its reach turned out to be much wider. The clip went viral and was featured on ESPN,
Tori traveled to the Pro Bowl as a one-man band to cover current Lions kicker and former UCF Knight Matt Prater’s trip back to his college town of Orlando to compete in the NFL’s all-star game. She shot, edited and produced six videos during the weekend to highlight his trip, including this behind the scenes look at the 2017 Pro Bowl. After some inspiration from The Late Late Show’s James Corden and his “Carpool Karaoke” feature, Tori Petry shows her personality and jams out on the ride to work with Lions punter Sam Martin.
Outside of her job as a multimedia journalist for the Detroit Lions, Tori stays close to the football field. In order to deepen her knowledge on the game even further, Tori plays cornerback for the Detroit Dark Angels in the WFA, the women’s full-pads, full-tackle football league that built players like former NFL coach, Dr. Jen Welter. This is a short compilation of highlights from her 2016 season.
Tori shot, edited, and produced this feature with Lions rookie Anthony Zettel. She went with Zettel to his hometown of West Branch, Michigan to take fans on a tour of his family restaurant and meet the people of Ogemaw County.
